Trees in Buckets!!

Another brief, yet somewhat comical setback has been with the fruit trees and bushes we ordered back in November.  We really thought we would be in our “new” home by December, so we bought several varieties of apple, peach, plum, and pear trees, ten in all, plus a raspberry bush, a blueberry bush, and two grape vines.

When the shipment arrived unexpectedly in early March we scrambled to find a way to keep them healthy while we wait to move.  We discussed digging holes here and planting the trees temporarily, but were fearful of damaging the roots when it came time to go.  After a great deal of deliberation (four days to be exact) and trying to research our options we bought inexpensive buckets from Home Depot, lined them with burlap and put in a bit of soil from our raised garden bed.  We then put in the roots and gently packed them with more soil.  Our hope is that when the day comes to put them in their “forever homes”, the roots will be healthy and able to transfer easily and the burlap will dissolve over time.

I’d be interested to hear from anyone who has tried this or a similar approach.

Thanks for stopping by!
